Atlanta, Ga. (July 24, 2013) – The future of patient care is coming to Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, the fourth among Piedmont hospitals to transition on August 1, 2013 to a new, comprehensive electronic medical record and practice management system called Epic.
The new system, which stores all health information from each of the Piedmont hospitals and doctors’ offices into one electronic medical chart, will allow doctors, nurses and other healthcare personnel across the Piedmont Healthcare system to access patient information. Test results, patient charts, reports and other important information will be available in real time at all Piedmont facilities.
“This new system allows any Piedmont entity to access patient files, so patients from across the system can easily come to Piedmont Atlanta and receive care without having to fill out the same forms,” said Les Donahue, president and CEO of Piedmont Atlanta. “Also, our doctors will quickly be able to pull up a patient’s medical history and know about current medications, allergies and other essential patient information.”
In addition, the implementation of the Epic system will simplify the payment process for patients. Once all Piedmont facilities have transitioned to the new electronic medical record, there will only be one Piedmont bill, even if the patient is visiting more than one Piedmont facility.
“By streamlining our records to an electronic system, Piedmont facilities can function much more efficiently,” said Donahue. “We are happy to offer a new level of convenience to our patients for their healthcare needs.”
When visiting Piedmont Atlanta Hospital over the next few weeks, patients may need to expect some processes to take slightly longer than normal while the nurses, physicians and staff become proficient with the new system.
