Atlanta, Ga. (October 29, 2013) – Erin M. Dunbar, M.D., a nationally renowned brain tumor specialist, has joined Piedmont Physicians Neuro-Oncology.
Dr. Dunbar, who is one of just a few hundred neuro-oncologists in the United States, will direct the medical neuro-oncology program and spearhead the clinical trial research program at the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center.
“Brain tumors are a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women, and the number of diagnoses continues to increase,” said John Goodman, executive director of oncology services for Piedmont Healthcare. “The addition of Dr. Dunbar to our team at the Brain Tumor Center is critical to patients having continual access to experimental treatments when traditional measures start to lose effectiveness.”
The National Cancer Institute estimates that 23,130 people will be diagnosed with brain and other nervous system cancers in 2013. Additionally, over 14,000 people will die from brain and spinal cord tumors.
“My goal is to get patients the information and treatment they need as quickly as possible after their diagnosis,” said Dr. Dunbar, who previously co-directed the Preston A. Wells, Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy at the University of Florida. “No two brain tumor patients, or tumors, are alike. I partner with many other specialists to develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient.”
Also at the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center to support patients in the fight against cancer is patient navigator Freda Wall, PA-C, whose primary responsibility is to guide brain tumor patients through their continuum of care and provide comfort during this difficult time. Wall’s position is funded by Besty Orr, whose late husband lost his battle with a Glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive, malignant brain tumor, in 2011.
As a not-for-profit entity, Piedmont relies on the generosity of others like the Orr family in order to offer many programs and advanced medical technology like what is found in the Brain Tumor Center to the community. Dr. Dunbar is an active member in the Society of Neuro-Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Academy of Neurology. She is available at Piedmont Physicians Neuro-Oncology located at 2001 Peachtree Road, Suite 645 in Atlanta, Ga., and welcomes new patients.
