NEWNAN, Ga. (September 7, 2010) – Piedmont Heart Institute Physicians at Sharpsburg welcomes Eric S. Mitchell, M.D., to its medical team. He will begin seeing patients September 10, at 20 Francis Way, Suite 200, in Sharpsburg, Ga. A native of Newnan, Dr. Mitchell comes to Piedmont after 10 years of active duty service in the United States Navy at the rank of Commander.

Dr. Mitchell specializes in general and invasive cardiology. A graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., he received his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Ga. Dr. Mitchell completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga., and his cardiology fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
A participant in the Navy ROTC and Navy Health Professions Scholarship programs, Dr. Mitchell’s duty stations included Naval Hospital in Sigonella, Italy, and Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. He has deployed on a humanitarian medical mission aboard the hospital ship USNS Comfort to assist 12 countries in South and Central America and has provided cardiology consultations at the medical facilities in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
During his military career, Dr. Mitchell received numerous military and medical awards including a Navy Commendation Medal.
Dr. Mitchell is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty of Cardiovascular Disease. Clinical interest in cardiac imaging has led to his board certification in nuclear cardiology, as well as training in cardiac CT and echocardiography. He also is skilled in the performance of diagnostic cardiac catheterization, permanent pacemaker insertion and transesophageal echocardiograms. Dr. Mitchell is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and member of the American College of Physicians.
