May is designated as Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Stroke Awareness Month.
ATLANTA, Ga. (March 23, 2011)—In recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Stroke Awareness Month in May, Piedmont Hospital is hosting free cancer screenings and stroke assessments on Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. until noon at the Piedmont Outpatient Center located at 1800 Howell Mill Road in Atlanta, Ga.
Skin cancer the most common form of cancer, with over 13 million cases diagnosed in the United States annually. The early detection of skin cancer is essential to successful treatment, and the best way to detect skin cancer is with a visual screening by a qualified health professional. Free “exposed skin only” screenings will be conducted at the event by dermatologists and physician assistants.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in America, but many people do not realize how educating themselves and others will help reduce the incidence of stroke and recognize one for immediate treatment. Free stroke risk assessments will be offered at the event in recognition of stroke awareness month.
Dentists will also be on hand to provide free oral cancer screenings. Nearly 37,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer each year, resulting in over 8,000 deaths. The death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high—not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development.
