JASPER, Ga. (February 08, 2011)—Folsom C. Proctor, III, M.D., has been named vice president medical affairs for Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. In his new role, Dr. Proctor will supervise the medical staff at the hospital and oversee quality assessment and improvement in healthcare programs. Dr. Proctor was previously in his own practice as an orthopaedic surgeon for over 15 years.
“Dr. Proctor’s experience with both patient care and hospital administration make him an ideal advocate for our many quality and care improvement initiatives,” said Piedmont Mountainside Hospital CEO Mike Robertson. “In his new role, Dr. Proctor will serve as a liaison between the medical staff at the hospital and administration. He will encourage continued growth and development of our medical staff and help maintain our nationally recognized reputation for patient care.”
Dr. Proctor is a native of Atlanta, Ga. He graduated from Woodward Academy, where he received several academic and athletic awards. His undergraduate studies were at Wake Forest University, where he played football and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He also spent a short time as a professional baseball player.
Shortly after graduation from Wake Forest, Dr. Proctor returned home to oversee the family wholesale lumber company. In 1985 he sold the company and entered medical school at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga. where he received his Doctorate of Medicine in 1989.
After two years as a general surgery intern and resident, Dr. Proctor pursued training in orthopaedic surgery. In 1995, he finished his training at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, in Atlanta, Ga., and is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery, a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Proctor has served as medical staff leader for most of his career and held positions including chief of surgery, secretary/treasurer and vice president, president elect and president of the medical staff. He was heavily involved in the campaign for a replacement hospital in the Pickens County community and served as a founding member of the Piedmont Mountainside Advisory Board of Directors. He is currently a member of the quality subcommittee for the Piedmont Healthcare Board of Directors, and for the past year, has served as the vice president of medical affairs of Piedmont Mountainside on a part time basis, while continuing his devotion to his patients and his clinical practice.
An active member of the local community, Dr. Proctor has provided coverage for the local schools athletic events for over 15 years established a “Bump and Bruise” clinic for the football teams on Saturday mornings. He has served on the board of directors for the Pickens County Department of Health since 2004 and is a former member of the Good Samaritan Board of Directors.
Dr. Proctor, his wife Karen and son Folsom currently reside in Jasper. He enjoys family life, gardening, off-shore fishing, scuba diving and boating. He is very excited about his new role and the role Piedmont Mountainside Hospital will play in the future of quality healthcare in north Georgia.
