Newnan, Ga. (November 13, 2012) – Piedmont Newnan Hospital, known for its eye-catching and environmentally conscious design by Perkins+Will, recently was awarded a Design Citation by Modern Healthcare.
This award, which is one of the most respected in the healthcare design industry, recognizes healthcare facilities for design excellence, functional utility, flexibility and sustainability. Of the 105 entries submitted for this award, Piedmont Newnan was one of six given a Design Citation. Three were awarded Honorable Mentions and two earned the Award of Excellence from Modern Healthcare.
“Since opening the hospital in May, we’ve seen an increase in staff morale and patient satisfaction - both of which can be attributed to the sleek design that promotes healing and exudes comfort,” said Michael Bass, president and CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “The Coweta community waited a long time for this beautiful hospital and now we have a facility nationally recognized for innovative design and cost, resource and operational efficiency.”
Behind the award-winning design of the 136-bed hospital is the internationally recognized design firm Perkins+Will, whose team carefully planned the hospital to double in size without disruption to existing operations or entrances. Working with Piedmont Newnan’s leadership, the design team also crafted the patient experience for the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital by using extensive natural light, simplified way-finding and access to nature from all public spaces in the design.
“Piedmont’s leadership team challenged traditional thinking and brought to life a remarkably efficient, flexible facility that will grow gracefully to serve the Newnan community well for many years,” said Richard Herring, principal and director of healthcare planning at Perkins+Will. “Whether you are an inpatient or just receiving outpatient care, their focus on the patient experience is evident from the moment you enter the campus.”
In addition to being built to improve efficiency, flexibility and quality of care, Piedmont Newnan was designed with LEED certification in mind. Adorned with beautiful trees, trails, a pond stocked with over 2,500 fish and an abundance of nature, the Piedmont Newnan campus spans 105 acres, 60 percent of which remains untouched. The hospital, which expects to see $655,000 in annual energy savings and an additional $25,000 in savings due to a reduction in potable water usage, is currently applying for LEED certification.
Construction of the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital began in 2008 when, not long thereafter, the slow economy forced the project to be put on hold. Just over a year later, construction resumed and upon completion in May 2012, the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital cost $30 million less due to the team’s focus on cost savings.
