Atlanta, Ga. (September 24, 2013) – Board-certified pulmonologist Mayur Patel, M.D., who recently joined Piedmont Physicians Pulmonology in Newnan, Ga., is looking to spread awareness about a little-known, yet not uncommon form of lung disease that affects nearly 200,000 people across the United States.
“Pulmonary fibrosis affects people from a wide range of demographics; however, many people still do not know much about the disease,” said Dr. Patel, who has practiced pulmonology for 13 years. “With 50,000 new cases of the disease occurring each year, much greater awareness surrounding the disease is needed.”
Pulmonary fibrosis, which is one of the most common types of lung disease, consists of severe scarring of the lungs, making it difficult for the lungs to deliver oxygen throughout the body. Pulmonary fibrosis can be caused by environmental hazards, drug side effects, infections, genetics, or it can occur with no known cause.
“It’s unfortunate, but sometimes we simply don’t know what causes pulmonary fibrosis. Even the symptoms can be subtle until the disease has progressed and lung functioning has worsened,” said Dr. Patel, who earned his medical degree from Amravati University in Amravati, India. “Despite all the unknowns surrounding the disease, there are treatment options for these patients including medication, oxygen therapy and lung rehabilitation.”
Symptoms of Pulmonary Fibrosis include shortness of breath, dry cough, fatigue and weakness, chest discomfort and rapid weight loss. Patients who experience these symptoms are encouraged to visit their doctor.
Prior to joining Piedmont Physicians, Dr. Patel was an attending physician with Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates in Jacksonville, Fla. and Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. He received his training in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery at Bombay Hospital and Research Center in Mumbai, India.
