A very effective treatment we often use at Piedmont is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. In Hyperbaric therapy, patients are placed in a pressurized but comfortable, chamber where they breathe 100% oxygen at two to three times greater than normal atmospheric pressure. The extra oxygen goes into the bloodstream and helps speed healing, decrease swelling and inflammation, and increase the body's ability to fight infection.
There are many types of wounds that benefit from hyperbaric therapy, but some key indicators include:
- A wound that hasn't healed after greater than 30 days
- A wound that hasn't healed in a patient that also has diabetes
- A wound that increases in pain, drainage, odor or changes in color
- A surgical wound that has become infected
In most cases a physician referral is needed to start treatment, so to find out if hyperbaric therapy can help you, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you have questions about hyperbaric treatments and the benefits they can deliver, feel free to contact us.
