John Hennecken, M.D. was born in New York City and earned his undergraduate degree from Saint John’s University. He was commissioned an officer in the United States Army Reserve upon his graduation from Saint John’s. He attended medical school at the S.U.N.Y. Health Science Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and graduated with honors in 1981. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society in 1980. He completed his medical internship and residency at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Bronx Municipal Hospital, where he was also a Chief resident. Dr. Hennecken completed his cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowships at Yale University from 1985 to 1988.
After his cardiology training Dr. Hennecken served two years on active duty at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where he was Director of the Cardiology Clinic. In 1990, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas in San Antonio and was Director of Interventional Cardiology at the Audie Murphy VA. At that time he was an investigator in the Palmaz-Shatz Stent Restenosis Study. In 1992, he accepted an appointment as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization labs at the Medical College of Georgia and Augusta VA Hospitals. When the Palmaz-Shatz stent was released he was a proctoring cardiologist for this device. He was also a proctor for the TEC atherectomy device. He has been in private practice since 1995 and has served as Director of the Cardiac Catheterization labs and Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Dr. Hennecken is currently focused in general cardiology, echocardiographic and nuclear cardiac imaging as well as preventive cardiology. He sees patients in primarily in Eatonton, and has also seen patients in Blairsville and Rockdale.
Dr. Hennecken is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He passed the Interventional Cardiology board in 1999 and has additional current board certifications in Nuclear Cardiology, Echocardiography and Clinical Lipidology.
He has been married to Carol since 1981 and has four children, John, Christina, Kevin and Carolyn.
