Dr. Martin has been practicing medicine for 43 years. He is Board Eligible in Internal Medicine and has a special interest in Cardiovascular Imaging. Prior to joining the Piedmont Heart Institute, Dr. Martin served on the faculties of Stanford University School of Medicine, where he was a pioneer in the use of Echocardiography, the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, Virgina, The Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and for 20 years at Emory University School of Medicine, where Dr. Martin holds the title of Professor of Medicine Emeritus.
Dr. Martin has over 170 publications to his credit in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, as well as a number of teaching CDs and DVDs, and serves on editorial boards of some of the most prestigious cardiovascular journals. Dr. Martin is the past president of the American Society of Echocardiography – an organization of 16,000 cardiovascular specialists (Cardiologists, Cardiac Anesthesiologists, Cardiac Surgeons, and Sonographers) and the second-largest group of cardiovascular specialists in North America. Over his career, Dr. Martin has been a frequent invited lecturer at national and international Cardiology conferences, also serving for over 20 years as Host/Emcee of the largest and longest running International Medical Teleconference, Echo-In-Context.
Dr. Martin has been presented numerous awards, including the International Service and Scholarship Award, presented by the European Society of Echocardiography, the Leadership Award from the Japanese Society of Echocardiography, and in August, 2010, Dr. Martin was elected to Fellowship in the European Society of Cardiology (FESC). Dr. Martin is the only physician to be awarded the American Heart Association's Howard L. Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award for Medical Reporting, as well as having been nominated three times for Emmy Awards and being the recipient of various other Broadcasting awards. In 2010, Dr. Martin was awarded the National Marfan Association's prestigious “Hero with a Heart” Award. Other awards over Dr. Martin's career include: “Best Doctors in the United States”, “Best Doctors in Atlanta”, and “Who’s Who”.
