Atlanta, Ga. (August 19, 2014) – Piedmont Healthcare has partnered with HOPE Atlanta and Cristo Rey Atlanta to sponsor four students in the 2014-2015 school year in the Cristo Rey Corporate Work Study Program.
“As a non-profit health system, Piedmont Healthcare is committed to helping our communities become healthier and stronger,” said Jay Mitchell, Chief Legal Officer at Piedmont Healthcare. “Through this program, we are able to partner with these two incredibly well respected organizations, Cristo Rey and HOPE Atlanta, to create valuable opportunities for our youth.”
Cristo Rey Atlanta, a Catholic, college preparatory high school for underrepresented urban youth, operates a work-study program, which provides students with real world job experience through employment with outside organizations like HOPE Atlanta. This also allows students to earn a portion of the cost of their private, college-preparatory education at Cristo Rey.
HOPE Atlanta is a social service agency in Metropolitan Atlanta providing a safety net for low-income travelers, newcomers and residents in crisis for the last 111 years. Hope Atlanta provides assistance including emergency shelter, food, transportation and counseling to more than 15,000 people annually and over one million individuals since its inception in 1900.
One team of four students will perform entry level clerical tasks and other related activities at HOPE Atlanta. Each member of the team will work one full day each week and a fifth day during the course of every month of the school year. Student class schedules are arranged so that students do not miss any classes while working in their work-study positions.
“HOPE Atlanta is excited to be included in a partnership with Piedmont and Cristo Rey Atlanta,” said Ed Powers, Executive Director of HOPE Atlanta. “We believe that each student will gain invaluable insights into the problems and solutions that confront the Atlanta community, while HOPE Atlanta will receive much needed assistance in fulfilling our mission.”
As a nonprofit hospital system, Piedmont belongs to its community, and has since Piedmont Atlanta’s founding as a ten-bed sanatorium located in downtown Atlanta in 1905. Piedmont continues to stay committed to our communities, and that commitment is demonstrated through our community benefit programs designed to improve health and increase access to care. The work study partnership with HOPE Atlanta is a Piedmont community benefit program that works to both build our community and support key community partners.
“Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School is enormously grateful for the generosity and innovation of Piedmont Healthcare in devising a means to have our students gain real world work experience at the wonderful Hope Atlanta facility. Our school exclusively serves low income families and over half our expenses are covered by 38 companies like UPS, Coca Cola, and Delta Airlines. But Piedmont went still further by sponsoring a team to work at still another program that benefits the community. Atlanta should be proud to have Piedmont Healthcare in our city.” Bill Herald, Director of Corporate Work Study Program, Cristo Rey Atlanta.
At Draft Day on Friday, August 15 at 2:00 p.m., Cristo Rey will match students with their new companies.
The event will be held at Cristo Rey Atlanta located at 680 W. Peachtree St. NW Atlanta, GA 30308.
