Piedmont researchers are constantly involved in clinical trials to discover new medicine, treatment and technology. Besides paving the way for better medicine, clinical trials can offer patients the chance to try cutting-edge cancer treatments before they become publicly available. Prevention studies can uncover new and better ways to prevent cancer and minimize or even eliminate unpleasant side effects of treatment.
Our researchers share their knowledge through monthly cancer conferences, where physicians deliver presentations on various types of cancers and new research, updating the medical staff on the latest innovations in cancer care.
Piedmont's cancer services are affiliated with the Atlanta Regional Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP), under the auspices of the National Cancer Institute. The CCOP participates in clinical trials with the Southwestern Oncology Group, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Cancer Trials Support Unit, the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group. These affiliations give Piedmont physicians access to over 45 clinical protocols investigating new therapies for various types of cancer. Piedmont also participates in pharmaceutical industry-sponsored trials.
