Dementia Caregiver Support Group

These monthly support groups are for the caregivers of older adults with memory loss. Designed to be both informational and supportive, these groups provide a confidential and welcoming atmosphere for family members who want to learn more about dementia. The emotional, medical, legal, and financial aspects of this condition are discussed at every meeting. Every second Thursday from 1:00 - 2:30 pm at the Second Ponce De Leon Baptist Church in Buckhead, 76 E Wesley Rd NE; and every fourth Monday from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Wieuca Road Baptist Church near Phipps Plaza, 3626 Peachtree Rd NE.

Caregiver Workshops

Diagnosis of Dementia: For Family Members and Close Friends

A new diagnosis of dementia in a loved one often results in a challenging time of uncertainty and confusion for family caregivers. This workshop provides extensive information about the causes of dementia, caregiver stress, legal and financial issues which need to be considered, and end-of-life issues. This workshop is not appropriate for paid caregivers, hired to look after the patient. It is for family members and close friends only. Offered every spring and autumn, this workshop is co-sponsored by Sixty Plus and the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia chapter.

"DIAGNOSIS OF DEMENTIA: NOW WHAT?"

This workshop focuses on the difficult behaviors often associated with dementia: agitation, restlessness, paranoia, sundowning and belligerence. Family caregivers will learn effective communication techniques and behavioral interventions. The role of medication in managing difficult behaviors is discussed by a geriatric nurse practitioner. This workshop is not appropriate for paid caregivers, hired to look after the patient. It is for family members and close friends only. Offered every spring and autumn; co-sponsored by Sixty Plus and the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia chapter.

Caregiver Skills Training

Teaches both family and professional caregivers how to appropriately and safely care for older adults in the home setting.  This workshop is offered twice a year and is co-sponsored by Sixty Plus and Rehabilitation Services at Piedmont Hospital.
