Piedmont's liver transplantation program was started in 2005 to fill a real need in Georgia. In 2004, 99 livers procured in Georgia were transplanted out of state.
The program also fills a growing need for services nationwide.
According to UNOS, the number of people waiting for livers in this country has increased nearly nine-fold in the past decade.
