Liver Transplant Outcomes

For patients with acute and chronic liver diseases, Piedmont offers liver transplantation.

  • Piedmont's liver program is one of only two adult liver transplant programs in Georgia.
  • The liver transplant program is UNOS-approved and Medicare-certified.
  • Liver transplant options at Piedmont include whole organ, split liver and living-donor transplant.

Liver StatsPiedmont's liver transplantation program was started in 2005 to fill a real need in Georgia. In 2004, 99 livers procured in Georgia were transplanted out of state.

The program also fills a growing need for services nationwide.

According to UNOS, the number of people waiting for livers in this country has increased nearly nine-fold in the past decade.

Similar to our kidney/pancreas services, Piedmont's liver program expedites patient evaluation and case review, shortening wait times and saving more lives. Piedmont's future contributions in the area of liver transplantation include:

  • Living donor liver transplants in adults.
  • Ongoing and future participation in immunosuppression trials to decrease rejection and increase the opportunity for high-risk patients to undergo transplant.
  • Increasingly use of liver-related advanced therapies including those for liver cancer, such as, radio frequency ablation, therasphere® and trans-arterial chemoembolization.
  • Study of anti-viral therapies for pre- and post-operative liver transplantation to prevent recurrence and rapidly progressive viral hepatitis.
  • Liver Wait TimesOutreach efforts through satellite clinics and telemedicine.
