In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. Eighty percent of these women do not have any of the reported risk factors, other than being female and aging.
The key to surviving breast cancer is early diagnosis. Regular screening mammograms, breast self-exams and yearly breast exams by your physician can help.
Complete Care. The Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center at Piedmont Hospital offers comprehensive services. The Center provides screening mammography, diagnostic mammography, stereotactic biopsies, ultrasound-guided core biopsies and breast MRI. It was the first breast health facility in Georgia to be accredited in all its modalities—including mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy. Digital mammography is available in addition to bone density screenings.
Compassion. It's the human touch you'll notice when you visit the Center. Our physicians, nurses, technologists and patient representative will be sensitive to your individual needs, making certain you feel comfortable throughout your care. In addition, the Center employs a breast health specialist, who is a registered nurse, to make sure you're receiving emotional support as well as the appropriate physical care.
Commitment. It is our purpose. We want you to have the confidence you require, knowing we will do everything we can to ensure that you have the best experience possible.
Our Team. The Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center team is comprised of a dedicated staff of board certified radiologists, nurse navigator, mammography technologists, sonographers, and support personnel. By using digital technology we are able to achieve early diagnosis and optimal treatment. We are proud to have earned a reputation for quality care in the medical community.
Leading the Way. In 1995, the Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center at Piedmont Hospital became one of the first facilities of its kind in Atlanta. Today, the Center and its satellite facilities care for more than 36,000 women each year. The Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center and its satellite offices are certified by the Federal Drug Administration and accredited by the American College of Radiology.
Patient Programs. We know you must be able to make informed decisions about treatment. That's why patients are counseled by the breast health specialist from the time of diagnosis through testing, treatment and into recovery. Patient programs include pre- and post-operative education and support, the American Cancer Society's Reach for Recovery and Look Good/Feel Better programs, as well as support groups led by a psychologist. For more information, call the breast health specialist at 404-605-2007.
Do your part. You should perform breast self-exams every month. If you're over 30 years old, schedule a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year. Remember—if you're a woman and again, you're at risk.
