More on Radiosurgery

 RadioSurgery Overview

Stereotactic radiosurgery painlessly shrinks or eliminates tumors and abnormalities using focused beams of radiation.

It enables physicians to deliver higher doses of radiation more precisely and in fewer treatment sessions than ever-before possible. Even though it is called radiosurgery, the procedure does not involve making any incisions. Patients usually resume normal activities shortly after treatment.

One of the leading hospitals in the country for radiosurgery, Piedmont Hospital is the only facility in Georgia to offer two innovative technologies – Gamma Knife® and Trilogy™ – to treat tumors, both intracranial (inside the brain) and extracranial (outside the brain). Both the Gamma Knife® and the Trilogy™ Accelerator use highly focused radiation beams to destroy tumors and other lesions that could be otherwise inaccessible or inoperable.

The benefits of radiosurgery include the ability to:

  • Target the entire lesion while avoiding nearby healthy tissue and critical structures, such as the brain stem, nerves and eyes.
  • Provide radiation doses precisely to the borders of irregularly shaped tumors.
  • Treat tumors non-invasively (i.e., without surgery).
  • Perform the procedure on an outpatient basis with reduced recovery time.
